Alternative Medicine Veterans Health Care

Alternative medicine veterans health care is becoming more renowned. More and more Veteran’s Administration hospitals now have alternative medical care, giving veteran’s more options in their health care.

For instance in Tucson’s VA hospital they have a traditional Native American counselor, sometimes referred to as a medicine man, who stresses Native American beliefs about the links between mind, body and spirit. Many conventional medical treatments add insult to injury, which would make more sense to use the alternative care provided as well. Check your state VA hospital and see if they have alternative care.

Alternative Medicine Veterans Health Care: Agent Orange

Many veterans come back from the war with numerous physical, mental, and emotional conditions. Depression and emotional mood swings are common among Vietnam vets.

This in addition to other physical problems from being exposed to the toxic chemical Agent Orange. The alternative medicine for dealing with the affects of Peripheral Neuropathy, caused by Agent Orange, are B12 vitamins.

Alternative Medicine Veterans Health Care: Depression and Anxiety

Some veterans come back from war with mild to severe cases of depression and emotional trauma. These young men and women have been exposed to harsh living conditions as well as violence and bloodshed almost on a daily basis. It is called Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

Once they come home, the shock wears off, so to speak, and they are left to deal with the aftermath of their emotional and mental difficulties. This is where holistic medicine treatments come in.

There are several herbs, such as st johns wort, for dealing with depression and mood swings. Kava Kava, which is known for its calming and soothing qualities, is excellent for stress, seizures, and anxiousness.

These herbs coupled with mental and physical therapy is a godsend in treating victims of the war.

There is also alternative depression therapy that has been found useful in helping war vets deal with their depression and anxiety issues. Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) is also a safe and effective alternative treatment therapy for PTSD disorder.

Alternative Medicine Veterans Health Care: Rehabilitation Therapy

Because of the severity of some of the injuries brought on by the Iraq war, many vets are in need of continual health care and rehabilitation therapy. Rehab can last for several years while the individual struggles to regain their strength and mobility.

Different types of alterantive therapy used in rehab are massage and exercise therapy for regaining strength to limbs and learning to use prosthetics. This also includes mental therapy for traumatic stress.

Alternative Medicine Veterans Health Care: Aromatherapy and Insomnia

Aromatherapy is for whole body healing and is used for emotional, mental, and spiritual aspects, as well as the physical. Aromatherapy is a relaxing alternative to toxic sleep inducing drugs.

Many war veterans suffer from insomnia when back from war, and for good reason. They are in need of a peaceful frame of mind once again. Let’s help them with that.

Learning relaxation techniques such as yoga for calming and relaxing the nerves before bed may help with bouts of insomnia. Essential oils are also great for this purpose.

Essential oils can be used as a steam or candle to bring the chosen aroma into the whole room or used as a simple tissue application, such as dabbing a few drops on a tissue and leaving it lying next to you.

Aromatherapy creates feelings of wellbeing in the individual and restores equilibrium. This is something that many war veteran’s are in need of.

Essential oils are flammable, so care should be taken when using them. For more information, visit the links at the end of this article.
