Diabetes and Food

Diabetes and food is an important subject and should be looked at more closely. Anyone who suffers from diabetes knows that what they eat determines how they feel. Diabetics have unusually high glucose levels (high blood sugar) and should not eat certain foods, such as refined sugars and carbohydrates. This article will explore several areas of diabetes that one should know for treatment as well as for prevention.
Diabetes and Food: Healing Foods
You would never hear a conventional doctor say that diabetes is caused from a poor diet. But it’s true! Diabetes can be treated through eating proper whole foods and making that diet a way of life. It’s that simple.
I can’t tell diabetic people to stop taking their insulin but I can tell them to stop eating refined foods, sugars, and animal fats. The mono fat diet is good for the diabetic. It consists of good fats, like Extra Virgin Olive oil, Coconut Oil, Flax seed oil, nuts and seed oils.
The diabetic, whether they are type I (insulin dependent) or type II (not insulin dependent) can be healed through proper food maintenance. The best foods for the diabetic are beans and whole grains, both of which bring glucose levels down to normal.
The ideal diabetic diet is going to be low in animal fats and dairy products, but high in whole grains, legumes, and a variety of vegetables.
Diabetes and Food: Pharmaceuticals That Cause Diabetes
Did you know that many common drugs could cause a healthy person to develop diabetes? If you suffer from diabetes and are taking medications, it may be a good idea to talk with your doctor or health practitioner about the risks.
Here is a list of some of the more common drugs that can cause diabetes or interfere with a person who has diabetes.
Aspirin, steroids, birth control pills, ethanol in alcoholic beverages, caffeine (in large quantities), thyroid medications, anti-inflammatory drugs, anticoagulants, sulfonamide in antibiotics, estrogen, lithium, Phenobarbital, and diuretics. Diabetics should avoid taking these medications.
Diabetes and Food: Sunlight Alternative
Wow! Sitting out in the sun lowers blood glucose levels. Low levels of vitamin D have been linked to impaired glucose levels. When the diabetic is exposed to “natural” sunlight blood sugar drops and sugar in their urine disappears! Now that is incredible.
By healthy eating, getting moderate exercise, and laying out in the sun for thirty minutes every day, the diabetic is placed in a much more healing environment.
Diabetes and Food: Broiled Cactus and Milk Thistle
There are several alternative homeopathic remedies that help with blood sugar issues. Mexican herbologists have reported that broiled Nopal Cactus Stem, or better known as Prickly Pear can drastically drop blood sugar levels in the diabetic.
In the study they also broiled up some yellow squash and gave to a different control group of diabetics but it showed no difference in blood sugar levels.
Another important herbal remedy for diabetes is called Milk Thistle. Milk Thistle is a powerful antioxidant, which helps to repair the pancreas, thereby producing insulin normally.
There are also many plant foods that have helped with people suffering from Type II diabetes. They are brewers yeast, buckwheat, broccoli and related greens, (cruciferous family), okra, peas, fenugreek seeds, and sage.
