Eating a Healthy Diet: Making Healthy Food Choices

Eating a healthy diet will help you live an abundant life. What we take into our bodies has a strong effect on our current health. Though it is rarely thought of as such, food is among one of the most powerful “drugs” that will help prevent disease.

Prevention is key in life. However, many specific ailments can be treated down to the root of the problem by eating a healthy diet.

Many foods such as fruits, vegetables, and herbs contain very many powerful vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants. Whole grains and other whole foods also contain many valuable nutrients when it comes to healthy eating. Eating the way nature meant for us to eat will cure many of the chronic diseases suffered in society today.

Eating a Healthy Diet: Antioxidants

As the name suggests, antioxidants help the body fight against the effects of oxidation. Oxidation is a natural process associated with metabolism. However, oxidation can also occur as a result of being exposed to harmful environmental conditions. These conditions can include cigarette smoke, radiation, pollution, and herbicides.

One of the worse effects of oxidation is premature aging. When you don’t eat healthy foods, you don’t have the needed nutrients to fight off this process. Oxidation creates free radicals, which are very unstable.

Free radicals steal electrons from other cells in order to regain stability. If this process continues to go unchecked, cellular function will eventually be damaged. This is what creates the appearance of aging.

The skin can be read like a book. If you are not eating healthy, you can normally tell by the appearance of the skin. It can be overly dry or overly oily. You may develop blemishes such as liver or sun spots, moles or skin tags.

Ultimately, wrinkles will develop much sooner than expected. Normally when you age, you will develop wrinkles at some point in your life. This is a normal process. However, if you want to help prevent wrinkles from occurring too soon, then eat a healthy diet. Fortify your body with what it needs to combat early aging.

Eating a Healthy Diet: Food Choices

The human body is capable of storing and making many of it’s own nutrients. Unfortunately, antioxidants is not one of them. These have to be replenished on a continual basis. The best way to get them is through eating a healthy diet. One, especially rich in vitamins C, E, and beta carotene.

Fresh fruit is one of the richest types of foods you can eat to maintain an ongoing supply of antioxidants. They are rich in vitamins and minerals. Choose whole, fresh fruit such as berries, pomegranates, grapes, oranges, plums, pineapples, kiwis, lemons, and grapefruit.

In addition to fruit, vegetables are also rich in nutrients, specifically vitamins C, E, and high levels of beta carotene. Antioxidant rich vegetables include kale, red cabbage, peppers, parsley, spinach, red beets, and brussel sprouts.

Legumes (broad beans, pinto beans, and soybeans), nuts (pecans, walnuts, hazelnuts, sunflower seeds), whole cereals (barley, millet, and oats), and herbs (cloves, cinnamon, oregano, ginger, and garlic) all play an important role in promoting cellular health.

When possible, choose fresh, unprocessed foods. If you can afford it, you should purchase organic foods. Not only are organic foods richer in antioxidants than their genetically-modified and hybrid cousins, but they are grown without the use of toxic pesticides. Because these chemicals can be a cause of free radical production, it makes sense to avoid them whenever possible.
