Eating Out Healthy: Healthiest Fast Food, How To Eat Out

Healthy Eating Out

Is there such a thing as eating out healthy? Most restaurant chains only want to please our taste buds and they know just how to do that.

But there are some great restaurants, especially in the bigger cities that are conscientious to health and serve nutritious dishes.

Even so, eating out is almost never as healthy as eating our own home cooking. But if you want to eat out once in awhile there shouldn’t be a problem if you stick to some healthy eating guidelines.

I know that eating out with friends can turn into a very nice social event. Just stick to what you learn in this article, and as long as you don't eat out too often, it should be alright. This article will talk about foods to avoid, and tips to adhere to that will keep you staying healthy while eating out.

Eating Out Healthy: Avoid Deep Fried Foods

Deep fried foods are one of the worst foods for our health. They are loaded with hydrogenated oils that literally clog up the arteries and cause weight gain.

Deep fried foods taste good to the taste buds and that’s why we eat them. But we shouldn’t make it a habit to eat this way because it is very detrimental to our health.

Fast food restaurants and Chinese buffets are notorious for deep fried foods. If you must eat out at fast food restaurants, the best heart healthy fast food restaurant is probably Subway, with Taco Bell coming in a close second.

That is if you don’t eat anything deep-fried. If you want a hamburger you’re better off cooking your own burger at home.

Eating Out Healthy: Avoid Buffets

Buffet type restaurants make us fat. What usually happens when we eat at a buffet is we load up on bunches and bunches of food that we don’t need. Buffet eating causes weight gain. Most of the food in the buffet comes from a can and is processed.

This certainly will catch up to us after a time. If you do go to a buffet, first eat a salad because it will keep you from overeating.

If you happen to be at a buffet and you want to stay healthy, don’t allow your eyes and stomach to decide what to eat. Try and only eat the whole foods. Mashed potatoes (no gravy) and baked chicken with a side veggie is a good choice. Or have a steak with a side of veggies.

Stay away from the deep fried foods, canned vegetables, and most of the dessert bar. If you want a couple of cookies go for it, but don’t eat the cream covered cakes and pastries. That cream will definitely make you sick!

Eating Out Healthy: Do Eat Fish

Eating out can be healthy if you know where to go, and know ahead of time what restaurants serve what kind of food. Fish is one of the best foods to eat when you eat out. And I don’t mean eating deep fried shrimp or fish and chips either.

Some of the nicer restaurants usually have a fresh “catch of the day”, such as salmon and tilapia, both of which, if baked, are excellent foods to eat with a side vegetable.

Eating Out Healthy: Do Eat Soup and Salad

Stick to the salad bar and homemade soups and you can’t go wrong when eating out. In fact, if the soup is home made and you like the flavor, eat all you want! There are ways to stay healthy and still eat out.

We just need to know what foods to avoid and which ones we can eat. Call the restaurant manager ahead of time and find out if they offer fresh salads, soups, sandwiches, fish, steaks, and vegetables. Enjoy eating out every once in awhile.
