Fast Food Killed My Dad

by Connie
(NY, NY, USA)

My Dad died January 6, 1991 of a massive heart attack and it is my belief that fast food killed him. Granted, he did not do a lot of exercise, but he did eat a lot of fast food.

After I left home after turning 18, my Mom and Dad did not do a lot of cooking. Instead, they treated themselves to fast food. At the time, there was no nutritional information available for fast food, so they had no idea how bad it was for them.

I remember my Dad loving to go and get pizza and then afterward going to another fast food place for ice cream. Poor guy, he had a really bad sweet tooth. I wish he had the information then that we have available to us now.

Maybe if he had any idea how bad the food was for him, he might have been a little more careful. I really miss my Dad and I rarely eat fast food. I can't view it as a treat. To me, it's like putting poison in my body.

Perils of Fast Food
by: Paul

Thank you for sharing the tragic story about your father. When young, the effects of fast food are not really seen. However, when people grow older, they notice how much harder it is to do things and they get out of breath much easier. This is due to the lack of oxygen getting to the tissues of the body due to clogged blood vessels with cholesterol and other substances.

Education is very powerful. As you said, unfortunately what we know today about fast food wasn't available back when your father was younger and eating it. At least not to the same degree.

On a positive note, you have learned the connection between fast food and heart attacks. Kudos to you for abstaining for the most part. You are a positive role model.
