The motto, five a day, is a term meaning to add five colorful fruits and vegetables to your diet a day – that would be five servings. Let’s see if we can get our five servings of fruits and vegetables in just one day, through the meals we eat.
They say that eating five or six smaller meals a day rather than two or three bigger meals is better for you. All fruits and vegetables should be eaten raw, but lightly steamed veggies are fine too.
Five A Day For Breakfast – 7am to 9am
Having fruit for breakfast is the best time to eat fruit. Our body digests fruit better and faster when it’s eaten on an empty stomach. Common choices are apples, bananas, oranges, pears, grapes, etc. Pick your favorite fruit and enjoy it.
It takes approximately fifteen minutes to digest all the fruits I listed above, with the exception of the banana, which takes a bit longer, about 30 minutes. There is your first serving of fruit for the day. Now, lets move on to snack.
Five A Day For Snack - 9:30am to 10:30am
Many folks who aren’t real health conscious eat snacks that are salty, sugary, and oily. This way of eating doesn’t give your body the nutrition and energy it needs to get by refreshed for the rest of the day.
So a good snack to eat would be raw nuts mixed with dried fruit. Don’t be afraid to eat more fresh fruit for snack either, such as grapes, pineapple, bananas, etc. This is your second serving.
Five A Day For Lunch – 11:30am to 1pm
Lunchtime is where you can eat a red, orange, green, purple, raw or slightly steamed vegetable. Perhaps you like eating fresh green salads. This is a perfect lunchtime meal.
Salads can be as elaborate as you like. You can add turkey or chicken meat to your salad for added protein. This meal would be your third serving of fruits and vegetables. You’re almost there.
Five A Day For Dinner – 5pm to 8pm
What’s for dinner? Eat whatever you want for dinner as long as it is wholesome, organic foods. Be sure to eat your fourth serving of raw vegetables preferably raw or lightly steamed.
By eating another green salad with dinner you will be giving yourself a healthy prescription. Adding alfalfa or wheat berry sprouts to your salad would be really adding a healthy dose of medicine to your meal.
This is your fourth serving of vegetables – one more serving and you’ll be on home plate.
Healthy Snacks 8pm to 10pm
I like to snack on popcorn a couple of times a week. But before I do that I always eat an apple. I absolutely believe that eating an apple before bedtime ensures for healthy elimination in the morning.
Once you eat your fifth serving of fruit, whether it is an apple, banana, or pear, you can eat anything you want as long as it is made from whole foods. By eating five servings of fruits and vegetables every single day, you will be on the path to total health.
