Great, healthy breakfast foods like whole grain cereals such as oatmeal, cracked wheat, and granola are excellent in the morning. Breakfast is a very important meal of the day and shouldn’t be skipped. Captain Crunch and Frosted Flakes are not that healthy.
In fact, the FDA has stepped in and won’t allow cereal manufacturers to make health claims about their products anymore. These health claims are very misleading and have misinformed many people. For one thing, most breakfast cereals have very little whole grain and lots of sugar.

If you enjoy cereal in the morning for breakfast, why not make your own healthy granola. There are several different varieties of granola that you can create using nuts and dried fruits.
This basic recipe makes about 8 cups of tasty cereal. Cracked whole wheat is another excellent nutritious cereal that is made from the whole-wheat berry.
Granola Cereal Ingredients
- 6 cups oatmeal
- ½ cup raw sunflower seeds
- ½ cup un-hulled sesame seeds
- ½ cup pecans, chopped (optional)
- ½ cup unsweetened coconut
- 1 cup raisins or other dried fruit bits
- ¼ cup water
- ¼ cup raw honey or other natural sugar
- 2 tablespoons blackstrap molasses
- 1 teaspoon salt
- ¼ cups safflower oil
- ½ teaspoon real vanilla (optional)
Preparation
In a large mixing bowl add the oats, nuts, seeds, and coconut. In a blender add the water, honey, molasses, salt, vanilla and oil and blend for 15 seconds. Add the liquid to the oats and nuts, and mix well.
Spread out granola on cookies sheets and bake 10 to 15 minutes on the top shelf of the oven in a 350-degree oven. Add raisins when granola is done cooking. Store in airtight containers for up to one week in the refrigerator.

Nothing beats wholesome fresh fruit as a healthy start to the day. A crisp apple, juicy orange, or flavorful melon is full of antioxidants and because of that, fruit makes an outstanding snack in between meals too.
