Healthy Children Eating: Healthy Eating Children

Healthy Eating Kids

Healthy children eating is about eating the right foods and being a healthy, happy, growing kid. Cooking for children and getting them to eat healthy food can be a challenge sometimes.

Children grow so fast and because of that they need a higher amount of nutrients in their diets, especially during those growth spurts. The problem is with many young people these days; they prefer refined foods to the real thing. What can you do?

Healthy Children Eating: Picky Eaters

Is your child a picky eater? Do you offer them veggies and they won’t eat them. Is your child overweight?

Does your pantry have a lot of processed convenience foods for the taking? When your child knows they can have potato chips and hot pockets after dinner, they are less apt to go for the healthy foods.

So why are some children more picky than others? It starts with the food they were started out on as babies and toddlers.

If you often gave them sweet cookie biscuits, dry cheerios, and Ritz crackers to much on, their tastes buds are attuned to that flavor and texture. They prefer refined foods to the real thing such as whole grains.

If you want your child to start eating healthier foods, you’ll have to take away the refined junk foods. It’s the only way to break them of this bad eating habit. Kids don’t know any different when it comes to eating right.

As parents, we’re in charge of what they eat, at least when they are at home. When they are in school or at a friends we can’t always know what kids are eating.

Healthy Children Eating Vegetables and Fruit

It’s not just the taste of broccoli and carrots your child doesn’t like. Often times it is the texture of the food in their mouth too.

Many kids would rather munch on raw carrots than cooked carrots, simply because of the difference in texture. So let them eat cleaned raw carrots. Nutritionally, raw is always healthier anyway.

Some vegetables like brussel sprouts and green beans need to be steamed first before you can eat them. Try topping off your steamed veggies with a little pizza seasoning, drizzle of olive oil, and a squirt of lime or lemon juice.

See if your kids like the vegetables that way. Get creative and try different seasonings and spices.

For breakfast, get up before your child and prepare a delicious fruit bowl for breakfast. Fruit is one of the most nutritious breakfasts that your child can eat. Afterwards, make some oatmeal and add some honey and cinnamon to it. Be sure to send them off to school with a healthy snack in their lunch.

Healthy Children Eating Takes Family Participation

Include your children in “what to cook for dinner”. Believe it or not, children love to be included in adult things and cooking is very much an adult responsibility. As long as the food they want you to cook for dinner is healthy, they should be allowed to decide what to cook two days out of the week.

On those days let them help you prepare and or cook the food, depending on what age they are. Get them involved in learning about cooking healthy food while they are still young.

Don’t worry. Your child will become accustomed to eating healthy food when it is consistently offered to them. You just need a little bit of patience. And remember, just because it is healthy doesn’t mean it tastes bad.

Healthy food actually tastes better than refined food. It is relearning the taste buds to accept fresh over refined and processed.

Slowly, stop buying refined food snacks so they will go for the healthier snack foods instead. Healthy eating takes some due diligence and persistence. It is something that the whole family can become involved in and finally be rewarded with good food and good health.
