Healthy Eating For Teenagers: Teen Fitness Nutrition

Healthy Diet For Teenagers

Healthy eating for teenagers is important because they go through several growth spurts at this time in their life. Physically active teenagers especially, need lots of complex carbohydrates to keep their energy levels going strong throughout the school day.

Eating a variety of fresh fruits, vegetables and whole grain products is very beneficial to the young persons diet. But most teenagers probably eat too much fast food and refined snack foods that can wreck havoc on their body and mind. What can a parent do?

Healthy Eating For Teenagers Means Healthy Snacks

During the summer months and when your teen comes home from school, have healthy snacks ready for your teen to eat or that they can prepare easily.

Fruit bowls with a drizzle of raw honey and homemade whip cream is a pretty good snack, as is whole-wheat toast with real peanut butter. Or how about whole grain crackers with sardines and cheese?

A raw vegetable platter made with carrots, cucumbers, and celery dipped in a yogurt dip is a great snack for teens to come home to. Teens love to snack around because they are always hungry. So why not have healthy snacks for them to munch on?

Healthy Eating For Teenagers Means Health Education

It’s important to instill healthy eating values in your child when they are young, so that when they are old they won’t depart from it. How can we teach our children the importance of good food and eating a balanced diet?

If you have always cooked pretty nutritious meals to begin with, and care about your own health, your child will notice that health and nutrition are important to you.

Consequently they will take more pride in their own healthy eating regime. Sometimes we forget how our actions influence our children.

Parents and children can read and study nutritional books together. This will help them understand how the food choices they make when they are young will have a big impact on their health later on. This will also help your teen to turn down the unhealthy foods for the healthy ones.

Healthy Eating For Teenagers and Weight

As we all know too well, diet plays a huge role in health and weight gain. Many teens are overweight and some of them are dangerously obese. This is very sad because neither the parents nor the teen has any clue to why they may be overweight, so they are unable to get a proper handle on it.

If your child is overweight and has health issues, it’s time to take some important health steps. Below are several healthy eating steps that you and your teen can do to help with losing the weight and getting back on track with health.

Teenagers Eating Healthy And Losing Weight

Have healthy snack foods available for your teen at all times. Replace soda pop with fresh juices and teas. Replace refined breakfast cereals with granola, oatmeal, whole wheat breads, yogurt and fruits. Cook nutritious meals at home rather than eat out in fast food or take out.

Choose lean meats over fatty meats. When eating hamburger use half ground meat and half ground turkey. Use mayonnaise sparingly or not at all.

Try not to us milky, creamy or mayonnaise based salad dressings on your salads. Use olive oil, diced garlic and the juice of a lemon or lime on salads and steamed vegetables.

Use low fat cottage cheese and chives on your baked potato instead of butter and sour cream. Eat more broiled fish and poultry rather than fried or deep-fried foods.

Get more active! Your teen can lose weight. And remember it’s not about dieting. It’s more about having good dietary habits and eating the right foods.
