Is there such a thing as healthy restaurant eating? Yes there is. Fast food restaurants probably won’t have anything that is healthy, but there are many other restaurants that will. Your best bet for finding healthy foods is to ask around. Perhaps your co-workers or friends know of a restaurant that serves up healthy eating plans. If you find a restaurant you are interested in, call and ask the management about what healthy entrée’s they serve daily.
Healthy Restaurant Eating For Lunch
If a restaurant makes homemade soups, and if their salad is made with fresh dark greens, then they have my vote. Better yet is if they serve whole wheat bread sticks and rolls to go with that soup.
If you live in the northwest or northeast you are sure to find restaurants with healthy eating menus. But unfortunately, in the Midwest and South finding a healthy restaurant is almost unheard of. Although they are out there, just less of them.
Healthy Restaurant Eating For Dinner
You really can’t go wrong with ordering grilled fish, steak, or chicken with a side of vegetables. The only time it becomes less healthy is if the meat is slathered in cream sauce or the fish is deep-fried.
Cream sauce is really not that bad for you, once in awhile, but if you’re trying to stay light and healthy, the Alfredo sauce with white flour pasta is a no-no. The simpler dishes with less ingredients will always be better for your health.
Healthy Restaurant Eating Buffet Style
When you think of buffet, you might think fattening unhealthy foods to overeat on. But in actuality, some of the nicer buffets have dark greens and veggies in their salad bar and lots of fresh fruit.
I know of a sure fire way to not overeat when going to the buffet. But there are some buffet healthy eating guidelines you absolutely need to follow to stay healthy. Ok, let’s begin.
The best way to eat at a buffet is to eat like the Italians – in courses. Although in Italy they eat their fruit after the meal, the healthiest way to eat fruit is before the meal.
So go grab some of that pineapple and melon and wait 15 minutes for the fruit to digest. Now, go make yourself a salad. Always opt for the darker greens, the lighter the lettuce the less nutritional value.
Pass up the processed salami, ham and turkey meat that is in the salad bar. That stuff is really bad for your health. Instead, pile on the fresh veggies, like broccoli, onions, carrots, and mushrooms. Add a teaspoon of sunflower seeds to your salad. Oil and Vinegar are the healthiest dressings.
Take your time and enjoy your salad. After you eat your salad go grab some food! But remember don’t eat anything deep fried, smothered in cream sauce, or processed. You can eat at buffets and stay healthy.
Healthy Restaurant Eating On The Run
With the rush-rush lifestyle, many times we’re in a hurry and don’t have time to sit in a restaurant for lunch. Pass up the fast food.
If you live in a big city, you can probably find good take-out Asian fare that doesn’t have MSG in their food. A healthy Chinese dish will be a simple dish, such as rice noodles with vegetables, or a vegetable dish with chicken or beef.
Be sure to call ahead of time to see if their dishes are made with only fresh, whole ingredients and minimal sauces and creams. Pass up any deep fried foods too. That’s the stuff you want to stay away from.
So there you have it. You can still enjoy eating out in restaurants and be healthy.
