High Fiber Diet Plan

Fiber In Food

The high fiber diet plan is a good diet for anyone to incorporate into his or her eating lifestyle. Eating food high in fiber is good for the digestive system as well as for lowering blood cholesterol levels, which is heart healthy.

Eating a high fiber diet containing lots of foods with fiber has shown to prevent colon cancer.

Fiber Rich Foods

Most people when they think “high fiber” they think of a high fiber cereal such as bran flakes and rolled oats. All whole grains are very high in fiber, like brown rice, whole wheat and millet.

The high fiber diet plan should also include legumes, plenty of fruit and vegetables, whole grains, nuts and seeds. All of the foods mentioned above are high in fiber, and will help the body feel healthy.

It is recommended to eat eleven servings of foods with fiber in a twenty-four hour period. Complex carbohydrate food, such as whole grains, breads, pasta, rice, and root vegetables not only provide starch and fiber but valuable vitamins and minerals to the body.

Take a look at the list below and see if you are eating eleven servings of these good sources of dietary fiber in your daily diet.

  • Legumes
  • Nuts and seeds
  • Brown rice
  • Lentils
  • Barley
  • Variety of Fruits and Vegetables
  • Whole-wheat products
  • Dried Fruit
  • Millet
  • Popcorn
  • Rolled Oats
  • Bran
  • Buckwheat
  • Whole grain Pasta
  • Corn meal
  • Potato with skins
  • Beets
  • Sweet Potatoes
  • Turnips
  • Carrots

High Fiber Diet Plan With Fruit

All fruit has fiber, but some fruit has more fiber than others. Dried fruit is more concentrated and people tend to eat more pieces of dried fruit than the whole variety. This is why dried fruit seems to offer more fiber per serving.

But watch out, dried fruit has more sugar and calories. Also juicing fresh fruit and vegetables are an excellent way to receive fiber as will as mega nutrients. See below for some of the more common high fiber fruit.

Fruits with High Fiber

  • Prunes
  • Dates
  • Figs
  • Papaya
  • Apples
  • Raisins
  • Pears
  • Ripe bananas
  • Grapes
  • Apricots
  • Peaches
  • Mangoes
  • Fresh fruit juices

Fiber Content of Foods

The fiber content of foods depend on what those foods are. Legumes, for instance are considered a starch food, but are very high in fiber. Oats and bran both have a lot of fiber. These types of fiber give the intestines the bulk needed to assist in efficient elimination.

Food high in fiber is usually very filling but low in fat. Therefore, they are wonderful foods rich in fiber to eat if you want to lose weight. If your body is not used to eating a lot of fiber rich foods, then start out slowly to give your body a chance to adjust to the added fiber in your diet.

Don’t forget that fruit and vegetables are also good sources of nutrients and antioxidants. Eating a high fiber diet plan is an all around good idea if you want to have good health.
