Nutritional Yeast: What is Nutritional Yeast

Nutritional Yeast is primarily grown and used for it’s nutritional value. It comes from a certain strain called Saccharomyces Cerevisiae. This is not bread machine yeast that makes bread rise. It is not to be confused as Brewer’s Yeast either. Other strains of Saccharomyces cerevisiae are used for wine, bread, and making beer.

Nutritional Characteristics

The yeast is an excellent source of vitamins and minerals as well as other various nutrients. It is especially noted for it’s rich source of the B-complex vitamins. B-complex vitamins have many functions and are essential to the wellness of the body and mind.

Each B-vitamin has a specific function. For example, vitamin B6, which is Pyridoxine, is needed to help produce red blood cells and antibodies. B6 also helps create a normal functioning musculoskeletal system and nervous system. Vitamin B1 is also involved in the nervous system.

Vitamin B12, which is also called Cyanocobalamin, helps prevent anemia and developing nerve damage. It has many other functions as well, which include helping you with proper digestion, making you more fertile, and in your overall growth. For those who are female, vitamin B12 also helps during your pregnancy and lactation.

Though Nutritional Yeast is full of B vitamins, vitamin B12 is added from an outside source to complete the B-complex representation. It is developed by bacteria and is later combined.

Physical Characteristics

Besides other groups of people, this particular yeast appears to be very popular with vegans. Vegans are people who don’t eat meat or any other animal products.

The yeast gives a very nutty, cheesy, creamy flavor and has proven to be a very good source of protein. The protein found in it is as high as 52%, so this yeast can be considered as one of the protein foods vegans will consume. Within this protein are essential and non-essential amino acids that the body needs.

How Can You Use This Yeast?

Vegans like to use this instead of using parmesan cheese. It can be added to almost any kind of food. Specifically through a shaker, some people have sprinkled it on salads, pasta, or sandwich fillings. You could also mix it in scrambled eggs or add it to your beans or even a casserole.

Some have even sprinkled it on popcorn. In fact, there are some movie theaters that make it available along with other products as a popcorn condiment. As you can see, this particular food can be eaten with so many different kinds of food.

Nutritional Yeast can be found in many natural and health food stores. You can normally locate it in the sections where bulk items are usually kept.

It is so rich in vitamins and other nutrients that is has been suggested a person who is having an afternoon slump can consume a quarter cup of yeast flakes in a little milk or orange juice. This will help to improve your condition. This may taste a little funny at first, but the taste tends to grow on you.

Those interested in the consumption of Nutritional Yeast should limit themselves to no more than three tablespoons per day. Consuming more than this may potentially cause an increase in uric acid in the bloodstream. This can create undue stress on the kidneys, and may also contribute to gall stones and gout.
