Restaurant nutrition facts vary greatly depending on the restaurant and what you order from the menu. A health food restaurant is going to serve whole grains, salads, and homemade soups, sprout sandwiches and soy burgers.

But as we all know too well, many restaurants cater to the taste buds rather than health. They may serve deep fried foods, rich fatty sauces, and endless refined buffet type foods.

We’ve all eaten our fair share of Chinese restaurant food. The menu is made up of deep fried foods such as chicken, shrimp, and egg roles. They serve different sauces and gravies for their vegetable and meat stir fries that taste great to the taste buds.

But some of us walk away from eating a big Chinese restaurant meal not feeling quite right. What’s wrong? It’s called Chinese restaurant syndrome.

Chinese restaurant syndrome is a temporary illness some people get after eating a flavor enhancer. This is popular in Chinese and some American food restaurants and is called monosodium glutamate, MSG.

Symptoms include headache and burning sensation in the back of the neck. Luckily, the symptoms are only temporary, but it certainly lets us know how powerful of a food additive that MSG is on our health.

Restaurant Nutrition Facts: Food Allergies and Eating Out

When eating out in restaurants many of us must watch out for food allergies. These allergies can provoke a range of symptoms in people. From diarrhea and nausea to potentially dangerous swelling of the throat.

Foods that are most likely to cause an allergic reaction are foods that are processed. These types of foods are prepared and cooked into many restaurant meals and desserts. Most allergies are not caused from the food itself but what has been done to the food through processing.

  • Milk (raw milk will usually not cause a reaction in people).
  • Eggs (Organic farm raised chickens and their products, that have not been pumped with hormones and antibiotics will not normally cause an allergic reaction in people).
  • Wheat (refined wheat products that have been stripped of their goodness will cause problems in all people who eat them from obesity to IBS).
  • Fish (make sure fish is caught from fresh clean waters).
  • Shellfish (shell fish including shrimp is dirty. Clams and other crustaceans are like little filters capturing pollutants in its shell. No wonder many people get sick. Ugh!)
  • Nuts (nuts and peanuts are very carcinogenic and are high in fungus and pesticides.)
  • Peanuts (see above. Eat only organically grown nuts, peanuts)
  • Soybeans (see above. Eat only organically grown nuts, peanuts and beans.

Restaurant Nutrition Facts: Choosing a Restaurant

For the most part, eating out can be a fun experience as long as we take a few precautions. The best way to choose a restaurant targeting healthy eating is to do your homework.
  • Call the restaurant and ask them about their menu. Do they use MSG and other harmful additives?
  • Talk with other health conscience people and find out where they like to dine out.
  • Eat foods in their natural state such as grilled chicken or steak, baked potato, steamed vegetables and rice.
  • Veer away from eating sauces, gravies, and desserts that you are not sure of the ingredients.
  • Don’t eat shellfish
  • Ask the wait staff where the fish was caught.
  • Know exactly what you’re eating.
