The sage herb has many medicinal uses associated with it. It is a flavorful Mediterranean herb that is quite easy to grow. It is also excellent used in cooking.



Sage is great in poultry stuffing, gravies, chicken, fish and stew dishes. It can be grown in pots on the windowsill. Potted herb plants make beautiful kitchen décor that is practical for snipping off a few leaves and using in your cooking.

Most people associate sage as just another spice, but sage is used for many healing purposes because of its antiseptic properties. It is especially good used for cleaning infected wounds such as abscesses and boils.

Sage also has astringent and anti-inflammatory properties. When used in combination with thyme, it is very beneficial for problems with the teeth.

The sage herb is also known as a great relaxant to calm the nerves. If you often experience stressful situations, anxiety and panic, you can make a tea with sage and drink periodically throughout the day to help relax the nervous system.

Sage is very low in sodium and cholesterol. Sage is a good source of vitamin C, vitamin E, thiamin, copper, vitamin A, vitamin k, vitamin B6, iron, manganese, iron and magnesium, and is a very good source of dietary fiber.

Healing foods like cabbage and other cruciferous vegetables are complimented when sage is added to the dishes. Stuffing made with whole wheat bread is especially good for your health.

Stuffing made with whole wheat can always be substituted for potatoes as a side dish to your meals if you are watching your weight.

Whole wheat is loaded with essential vitamins and minerals that our body needs to sustain good health. Below is an easy sage stuffing without all of the calories.

Easy Sage Stuffing

Ingredients:

  • 1 loaf whole wheat bread toasted and cubed
  • 6 to 7 celery sticks diced
  • 2 medium onions, diced
  • 3 large cloves of garlic, diced
  • ½ cup butter
  • ¼ cup safflower oil
  • 1-teaspoon thyme
  • 2-teaspoon sage 2 bouillon cubes melted in 2 cups water
  • Salt and pepper to taste
Preparation:

In a large frying pan sauté the onions and garlic in oil and butter. Add the celery and cook for 15-minutes until the celery is soft. Add whole wheat bread crumbs and 2 cups of bouillon water.

Stir in the herbs. Salt and pepper to taste. Enjoy this easy sage flavored stuffing anytime, not just on the holidays.

Growing Sage

Sage is happy growing in containers in a kitchen window that gets good amounts of sunshine. Few pests and bugs bother sage. Leaves can be picked fresh and added into your favorite recipes or it can be dried out and stored for later use.

Fresh sage is not as aromatic as dried sage, and you will need a little bit more in recipes because of that. Sage, rosemary, and thyme are all great herbs that can be used together to add wonderful flavors to your cooking.
