Eating out in fast food restaurants may be considered a treat for many children. It may be difficult for them to abstain from such foods. But there are ways to limit their intake.

In the summer when school is out, don’t take your teens to fast food. Give your teen a break from such unhealthy fare. And when school starts back up again. Insist they pack a lunch three days out of the five. Let them choose what they would like to pack in their cold lunch.

Everyone benefits from eating a balanced diet, and teens especially benefit because they are feeding their body through the many growth spurts. Teens need to eat a variety of foods to balance their diet out.

Whole grains, vegetables and fruits are important foods for the growing teenager. Five to seven servings are recommended daily.

Fish, legumes, nuts and seeds are just as important. Still, fewer servings are needed per day than the whole grains and vegetable food groups. All of the mentioned foods are low in fat, and provide the essential nutrients growing children thrive on.

Although teenagers love the taste of fast food, there are nutritious meals you can make at home that they will love just as much.

Teens Healthy Eating: Shopping List

Most teenagers love eggs and they are healthful as well. You can make tasty and nutritious recipes using the incredible edible egg. Try making a vegetarian frittata using your child’s favorite veggies.

A slice of frittata would be great packed in the lunch box as well. Omelets are another great meal. Let your teen add whatever they prefer in their own omelet as long as it is healthy.

Other foods that teens like to munch on during the day are crunchy snacks like carrot and celery sticks. Make a healthful dip with yogurt.

Have healthy snack foods in the pantry such as granola, nuts, and fruit mixes like raisins and almonds. Get rid of the potato chips and make sure your teens have access to healthy foods.

Teenagers also love stir fry, and it is fun to prepare using the wok. Teach them how to cook stir fry because it is nutritious and easy to prepare.

Once the teenager becomes involved in the choosing and cooking of healthy foods, he or she will probably care more about their health. Make healthy eating a family affair!
